Plain-English definitions for the terminology used across Coach's Corner.
- Accumulator
- A single bet that links two or more selections; all must win for the bet to pay out.
- American Odds
- Odds expressed as a positive or negative number, showing how much you win on a $100 bet or how much you must stake to win $100.
- Arbitrage
- Exploiting differing odds across bookmakers to guarantee a profit regardless of the result.
- Asian Handicap
- A spread betting system that eliminates the draw by giving a half‑goal or quarter‑goal handicap to each team.
- Bankroll
- The total amount of money set aside for betting.
- Cashback
- A promotion that returns a percentage of your losses over a set period, credited as bonus funds.
- Decimal Odds
- A way to express odds as a single number, showing the total return per unit staked (e.g., 2.50 means $2.50 returned for each $1).
- Fractional Odds
- Odds shown as a fraction, indicating the profit relative to the stake (e.g., 3/1 means $3 profit for each $1 wagered).
- Free Bet
- A promotional token provided by a bookmaker that can be used to place a bet without using your own money.
- Futures Bet
- A bet placed on the outcome of a tournament or award, such as who will win the World Cup.
- Hedge
- Placing a bet on the opposite outcome to an existing bet to lock in a profit or reduce a loss.
- Implied Probability
- The likelihood of an outcome as suggested by the odds, calculated by dividing 1 by the decimal odds.
- KYC
- Know Your Customer, a verification process where the bookmaker checks your identity and age to comply with regulations.
- Live Betting
- Placing bets on a match while it is in progress, with odds that update as the game unfolds.
- Moneyline
- A bet on which team will win the match outright, with odds expressed as a positive or negative number.
- Over/Under
- A bet on whether the total number of goals scored in a match will be higher or lower than a set line.
- Parlay
- A bet that combines multiple selections into one wager, with odds multiplied together and all selections required to win.
- Payout
- The total amount of money returned to you after a winning bet, including your stake.
- Point Spread
- A handicap given to the favored team to level the betting field, expressed as a number of goals.
- Prop Bet
- A wager on a specific event within a match, such as which player scores first or the number of yellow cards.
- ROI
- Return on Investment, measuring the net profit or loss relative to the total amount wagered.
- Stake
- The amount of money you risk on a bet.
- Unit
- A standard measurement of bet size, often a percentage of your bankroll, used to manage risk.
- Wagering Requirement
- The number of times you must bet a bonus amount before you can withdraw any winnings from it.
